A certified true copy is a photocopy of an original document that has been certified as a true copy of the original. A notary public can create a certified true copy by:

  • Comparing the copy to the original and ensuring that there are no differences between the original document and the photocopy.

  • Placing their signature and seal on the copy.

  • Placing a stamp on the document which certifies that they have compared the original and the photocopy, and that, in their belief, the two documents are one and the same.

  • Certified true copies are often required for applications such as:

  • Academic applications and applying for post-secondary programs (University and College Admissions, IQAS, WES etc)

  • Employment applications

  • Government applications

  • Applying for a visa

  • Applying for professional or trade licenses (Licensing for Real Estate, Medical Council of Canada, Veterinary Technician License etc)
