1. Full legal name, date of birth, and address of the person in Canada (the host) The host is the person writing the letter and inviting the visitor to Canada.

2. The host's immigration status in Canada IRCC needs to know whether the host is a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or temporary resident. Include your status clearly and provide a copy of your ID or status document with the letter.

3. Full legal name and date of birth of the visitor being invited The name must match exactly as it appears on the visitor's passport.

4. The relationship between the host and the visitor Be specific. "My mother," "my friend from university," "my spouse's sister" — vague relationships raise questions.

5. The purpose and planned activities of the visit State clearly why the visitor is coming — a family reunion, a wedding, a vacation, a medical visit — and what activities are planned.

6. The intended duration of the visit and travel dates Provide specific dates where possible, or a clear date range.

7. Details of where the visitor will stay Confirm the specific address where the visitor will be staying, whether that is your home, a hotel, or another arrangement.

8. A statement of financial responsibility (if applicable) If you are covering any portion of the visitor's expenses, state this clearly. If the visitor is self-sufficient, the letter should note that and the visitor's own financial documentation will be submitted alongside.

Common Mistakes That Lead to Visitor Visa Refusals

Even when an invitation letter is included, these errors can cause problems:

Vague or generic language "I invite my friend to visit Canada" is not useful. The letter must be specific about who, why, when, and how.

Inconsistencies between the letter and other submitted documents If the letter says the visitor will stay for two weeks but the flight booking shows one month, that inconsistency raises questions.

The host's information is missing or incomplete IRCC needs to verify the host's status and address. A letter without the host's contact information, immigration status, or address is incomplete.

No relationship evidence The invitation letter is more persuasive when accompanied by photographs, messaging history, or other evidence of the relationship — especially for claims of family relationship.
